Einstein Health Glossary

ICD 10 - G61.0

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a disorder in which the immune system attacks the nervous system, causing weakness and even progressive paralysis of various muscles. Bacterial or viral infections, such as Zika, are among its causes

Symptoms

The symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome begin with weakness, burning, and tingling in the feet and legs, which spread to the upper body. Paralysis of different muscles may occur. The condition is especially dangerous when it affects the respiratory muscles

Causes

Guillain-Barré syndrome can be triggered by an acute bacterial or viral infection, such as Zika or measles. After the infection, the body generates an exaggerated immune response and ends up attacking the nervous system, which leads to progressive weakness and paralysis

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome is made through a medical evaluation of the symptoms. Additional tests may be requested to confirm the diagnosis

Prevention Method

The main way to prevent Guillain-Barré syndrome is to avoid bacterial or viral infections most commonly associated with the condition, such as Zika. Keeping your vaccination schedule up to date is also important

Treatment

For Guillain-Barré syndrome, transfusions of certain blood components and other medications help relieve symptoms and speed up recovery. Physical therapy is necessary in most cases

Duration

In general, treatment for Guillain-Barré syndrome lasts from six months to a year, although symptoms usually last for a shorter period. Some patients may require a longer recovery time, and there is a risk of lasting sequelae

Is it contagious?

Guillain-Barré syndrome is not a contagious disease, but the viruses and bacteria that cause it are

Can it be contracted more than once?

Although cases are rare, Guillain-Barré syndrome can occur more than once in the same patient
