What is agoraphobia?

Agoraphobia is a disorder related to intense fear of public places, especially if they are expansive and crowded, and of situations that may cause helplessness or embarrassment. The disorder can trigger a panic attack.

Symptoms

Agoraphobia triggers fear and anxiety in situations of exposure, or in places where the person feels they cannot escape or get help. Rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and nausea are among the symptoms of a crisis.

Causes

Agoraphobia may be related to other anxiety and panic disorders, but it does not have a single defined cause.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of agoraphobia is clinical and should be made by psychiatrists and psychologists.

Prevention Method

There is no specific way to prevent agoraphobia. However, psychological support and assistance from other professionals help to avoid or manage crises.

Treatment

The treatment of agoraphobia is generally psychotherapy. Psychiatric medications may be recommended, always at the physician's discretion.

Duration

Agoraphobia tends to accompany the person for life. But the duration of crises and their symptoms vary from person to person.

Is it contagious?

Agoraphobia is not contagious.

Can it be contracted more than once?

In many cases, agoraphobia is a chronic condition. Crises may arise more than once throughout life.
