Anorexia nervosa

Einstein Health Glossary

ICD 10 - F50.0

What is anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that causes individuals to have a distorted view of their own body. This leads to an obsession with weight loss and results in severely restricted food intake.

Symptoms

Weight loss, which can be extreme, and eating far less than necessary are symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Intense physical activity may also be present.

Causes

Genetic predisposition and social pressure to meet unrealistic aesthetic standards contribute to the development of anorexia nervosa.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is based on observing body image distortion, an intense fear of gaining weight, and refusal to eat even when underweight.

Prevention Method

There is no specific way to prevent anorexia nervosa, although consuming media that promotes unrealistic beauty standards is not beneficial. Psychotherapy sessions and other resources that help individuals cope with aesthetic pressures are valuable.

Treatment

Treatment for anorexia nervosa depends on medical evaluation. It is multidisciplinary and may involve psychotherapy, psychiatric medications (such as antidepressants), and nutritional education.

Duration

The duration of anorexia nervosa varies.

Contagious?

Anorexia nervosa is not contagious.

Can it be contracted more than once?

Anorexia nervosa can be managed, but relapses may occur. Therefore, long-term psychological support is especially important.
