Beriberi is a disease in which the body lacks a sufficient amount of vitamin B1. It is also known as thiamine deficiency, another name for vitamin B1.
Symptoms of beriberi include loss of appetite, weakness, limb pain, shortness of breath, and swelling in the feet and legs. The progression of the condition may lead to heart problems and palpitations.
The vitamin B1 deficiency that characterizes beriberi is caused by a diet with insufficient intake of the nutrient. Alcohol abuse is also a risk factor for the condition.
Beriberi can be diagnosed in a medical office based on symptoms and dietary assessment. However, doctors usually request a lab test to determine the vitamin B1 level.
Preventing beriberi involves a diet with adequate levels of vitamin B1, found in foods such as whole grains, beans, and beef.
Beriberi treatments include vitamin B1 supplements and increased consumption of foods rich in this vitamin, such as whole grains, beans, and beef. It may be necessary to treat complications of the condition.
The duration of beriberi depends on the level of deficiency and each person's response to supplementation. The treatment time is determined by the attending physician.
Beriberi is not contagious.
Beriberi is a vitamin deficiency that can occur more than once throughout life.
