ICD 10 - G934
Encephalopathy is a broad term for any disease that alters the function or structure of the brain.
Reduced ability to reason and concentrate, difficulty speaking and swallowing, memory loss, personality changes, seizures, and spasms are common symptoms of encephalopathy.
The causes of encephalopathy include infections, tumors, stroke, or chronic neurodegenerative diseases, among others.
The diagnosis of encephalopathy depends on clinical, laboratory, and imaging tests. This may include CT scans, electroencephalograms, and MRIs, depending on the medical suspicion.
Methods for preventing encephalopathy depend on its underlying cause. Infections can be avoided with good hygiene habits, while stroke is less likely in people with a balanced diet and regular physical activity, for example.
The treatment of encephalopathy depends on the origin of the problem. It may focus on the causes, such as using antibiotics to fight an infection, or on symptom management. Medical evaluation is essential.
The duration of encephalopathy is indeterminate and depends on the underlying cause.
Some causes of encephalopathy are contagious, such as viral or bacterial infections.
It is possible to have multiple episodes of encephalopathy caused by different factors throughout life.
