Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Symptoms of gonorrhea include pain during urination and abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina. Discomfort in the testicles and pelvic area is common.
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which is transmitted through sexual contact. It can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.
Gonorrhea is clinically diagnosed by a physician. Tests may be performed using discharge collected from the vagina, penis, or cervix. Regular screenings are important, as the disease may not show symptoms.
As with other sexually transmitted infections, the best way to prevent gonorrhea is by using male and female condoms.
Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics. Sexual partners of infected individuals should be notified and seek medical attention, even if they do not show symptoms.
Gonorrhea usually clears up within 14 days after starting treatment.
Gonorrhea is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person. It can also be passed from mother to baby during childbirth.
Individuals who have had gonorrhea can become infected again.
