ICD 10 - F63.2
Kleptomania is a disorder characterized by an intense impulse to steal.
In kleptomania, the stolen items are usually unnecessary and have little material value. The focus is on the act of stealing/shoplifting, even when the consequences may include job loss and potential legal issues, for example. As a result of the disorder, the person may develop anxiety and depression, among others.
Although the cause is still unknown, a family history of kleptomania and other impulse control disorders are considered risk factors.
Kleptomania is diagnosed by psychologists and psychiatrists after a thorough evaluation.
It is difficult to prevent kleptomania. Combining good psychological support with activities that promote well-being can help.
There is no cure for kleptomania, but treatment with psychotherapy and medication can help stop or reduce the compulsion to steal.
Kleptomania has no cure, but its manifestations can be controlled with treatment.
Kleptomania is not contagious.
Since there is no cure, kleptomania is only diagnosed once.
