Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body produces antibodies that interfere with communication between nerves and muscles, affecting various bodily movements.
Because it affects multiple parts of the body and causes fatigue and muscle weakness, myasthenia gravis leads to difficulty walking, speaking, eating, opening and closing the eyes, breathing, and general movement.
Myasthenia gravis is caused by the immune system attacking the body itself. The exact trigger for this response is unknown.
Diagnosis is based on symptom analysis, along with blood tests, imaging exams, and other evaluations.
There is no known way to prevent myasthenia gravis.
Although there is no cure for myasthenia gravis, certain medications and physical therapy sessions can improve quality of life and help slow disease progression.
Myasthenia gravis is a lifelong condition with no cure.
No, myasthenia gravis is not contagious.
Since it is a chronic condition without a cure, myasthenia gravis is diagnosed only once.
