What is Myasthenia Gravis?

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body produces antibodies that interfere with communication between nerves and muscles, affecting various bodily movements.

Symptoms

Because it affects multiple parts of the body and causes fatigue and muscle weakness, myasthenia gravis leads to difficulty walking, speaking, eating, opening and closing the eyes, breathing, and general movement.

Causes

Myasthenia gravis is caused by the immune system attacking the body itself. The exact trigger for this response is unknown.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is based on symptom analysis, along with blood tests, imaging exams, and other evaluations.

Prevention

There is no known way to prevent myasthenia gravis.

Treatment

Although there is no cure for myasthenia gravis, certain medications and physical therapy sessions can improve quality of life and help slow disease progression.

Duration

Myasthenia gravis is a lifelong condition with no cure.

Is it contagious?

No, myasthenia gravis is not contagious.

Can it be contracted more than once?

Since it is a chronic condition without a cure, myasthenia gravis is diagnosed only once.
