What is postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression is a depressive condition that affects the mother within one year after childbirth.
 

Symptoms

Symptoms of postpartum depression include anxiety, negative thoughts, persistent crying, sleep problems, fatigue, changes in appetite, and difficulty bonding with the newborn.

Causes

Postpartum depression may be related to hormonal changes, a history of mood disorders, psychological trauma, and lack of support during and after pregnancy.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of postpartum depression can be made by a doctor after analyzing the symptoms.

Prevention Method

It is possible to reduce the risk of postpartum depression by strengthening the support network for the pregnant woman and taking care of their mental health. Previous or existing episodes of depression should also be treated.

Treatment

Treatment for postpartum depression depends on the healthcare professional and may include psychotherapy, antidepressants, or hormone replacement therapy. Social and family support is also important during the recovery phase.

Duration

If left untreated, postpartum depression can last for several months or even more than a year.

Is it contagious?

Postpartum depression is not contagious.

Can it occur more than once?

Yes. In the case of another pregnancy, postpartum depression may develop again.
