Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common problem in the spine?

About 70% of the population experiences lower back pain—commonly known as back pain—at some point in life. Lower back pain is among the most widespread health issues worldwide and mainly affects women and people over 40 years old

What causes lower back pain?

Lower back pain occurs due to prolonged strain on the spine, poor posture, excess weight, and muscle atrophy. During an episode, the pain worsens with movements such as bending down, twisting the torso, or performing physical effort. In these situations, it is recommended to consult an orthopedist to evaluate the symptoms

Can kidney problems cause back pain?

Yes. Kidney stones and kidney infections (pyelonephritis) can also cause lower back pain. Their characteristics differ significantly from musculoskeletal pain. Kidney stones cause sudden, intense, colicky pain, with relief periods between episodes. In contrast, pain from pyelonephritis begins more slowly and progressively until it becomes continuous, and the patient may present symptoms such as fever, chills, vomiting, and changes in the color and odor of the urine, as well as initial burning and urinary discomfort

How does Einstein diagnose lower back pain?

Diagnosing lower back pain is a complex process that requires a detailed clinical examination and is not based solely on imaging tests. Often, findings from these exams are not responsible for the symptoms. However, signs such as loss of strength or changes in sensation in the legs and feet, nighttime pain, and sudden changes in bowel or bladder control serve as alerts for a more in-depth evaluation. Einstein has a Spine Center with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to assess, among other factors, the mechanisms triggering the symptoms and the appropriate treatment for each case.

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine in an “S” or “C” shape. It can occur in any part of the spine but is more common in the thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower back) regions. It can affect people of any age, but it is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence, when rapid growth makes the condition more noticeable. Learn more here

How does Einstein treat spinal conditions?

Einstein Orthopedics offers a comprehensive approach to the care of conditions affecting bones, joints, nerves, and muscles, from prevention to treatment and rehabilitation. The specialty includes areas such as sports medicine, surgery, and the treatment of orthopedic diseases. In addition, it provides diagnostic tests that allow for accurate and personalized assessments, helping to improve sports performance or promote a faster and more effective recovery

How can patients with back pain contribute to their treatment?

In addition to following the recommendations of the multidisciplinary team, patients can adopt simple daily habits to prevent or reduce lower back pain. The most appropriate actions include staying active, exercising regularly, maintaining emotional balance, reducing stress, and paying attention to workload and lifestyle habits such as sleep and nutrition
