Bioimpedance is a test that evaluates body composition and identifies the proportion of fat, lean mass, and water. The information obtained helps assess nutritional status and supports individualized dietary planning and ongoing health monitoring
Bioimpedance
Test
The bioimpedance test is a non-invasive method that evaluates the patient’s body composition:
- measures the percentage of body fat, skeletal muscle mass, and water content
- assists in developing a dietary plan according to each individual’s needs
- performed on a specialized scale, with an approximate duration of three minutes
- painless, non-invasive, and with quick result delivery
Before taking the test
It is important to understand how bioimpedance works and the guidelines to properly prepare for the day of the assessment
Preparation
- fast for four hours from food and beverages, including water
- do not engage in physical activity in the 24 hours prior to the test
- urinate before the test
- remove metallic accessories such as watches, rings, bracelets, necklaces, or anklets
Not following the preparation guidelines may affect the evaluation of body composition
How bioimpedance works in practice
Bioimpedance is performed using equipment that allows a low-intensity electrical current to pass through the body. The test takes approximately three minutes and uses the body’s response to the electrical current to generate results
During the procedure, the person does not feel pain or discomfort. The test report is available within up to five business days on the test results platforms
Indication
The test may be performed during nutritional assessment and follow-up consultations or through referral by a physician or nutritionist. When used for follow-up, the recommended minimum interval between assessments is 30 days
Contraindications
- Individuals with a pacemaker, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), or neurostimulator
- Pregnant women
- Children under seven years of age
- Individuals with bilateral limb amputation
- Individuals unable to remain standing in a static position for approximately three minutes
- Individuals weighing less than 10 kg or more than 250 kg
- Preferably, avoid taking the test during the menstrual or premenstrual period
In specific situations, it is necessary to consult units with appropriate equipment availability
